Multi-Factor Authentication - Managing MFA Settings

Introduction

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a term used to describe a secondary means to verify your identity for authentication. This second factor uses something you own (such as a phone) in addition to something you know (password) to prove your true identity. Changing your Default MFA Method

After you sign in to your work or school account with your user name and password, you'll automatically be presented with your chosen security verification method. Depending on your organization's requirements, this can be a notification or verification code through an authenticator app, a text message, or a phone call.

If you decide that you want to change the default security verification method you're using, you can do it from here. 

To get started, Open a web browser and navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com.  Log in using your HCC email address and password.

From the Security Info page, next to the Default sign-in method, click Change to select the method you would prefer to verify your login.  You will see a list of all of the methods that you have set up.  Possible options are 

  • Microsoft Authenticator - notification: You'll be notified through the Microsoft Authenticator app that you have a waiting verification prompt.
  • Phone - call +1 XXXXXXXXXX: You'll get a phone call on your mobile device, alternate phone, or office phone, asking you to verify your information.
  • Phone - text +1 XXXXXXXXXX: You'll get a verification code as part of a text message on your mobile device. You must enter this code into the verification prompt for your work or school account.
  • Authenticator app or hardware token - code: You'll use your authenticator app to get a verification code you'll type into the prompt from your HCC account.

Click the Save to save your selections.

Add or change your phone number

You can add new phone numbers or update existing numbers from the Additional security verification page.

1.

Navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and log in with your email address and password.  Click the Security Info link.

From the Security Info screen, identify the phone you would like to change the phone number for and click the Change link.

In the Phone dialog box, enter the new phone number and select if you want to have Microsoft send a text message or use a voice call to verify your login.  Click on Next so that the system can verify your number with a call or a text message.

Manage your MFA Authenticator App

If you need to move the MFA Authenticator app to another device, you will need to delete the existing app and add the app to the new device.

1.

Navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and log in with your email address and password.  Click the Security Info link.

From the Security Info screen, click Delete for the Authenticator app that you want to delete.  Click Ok to remove the Microsoft Authenticator from your account.

From the Security Info screen, click the + Add method to add a new authentication method to your account.

In the Add a method dialog box, select Authenticator app and click Add.

You will need to install the app on the new device from your device's app store. From your mobile device, open your device's App Store and search for the Microsoft Authenticator app.  Install the app from the store.

From the computer, On the Microsoft Authenticator -Start by getting the app screen, click the Next button.

From the computer, On the Microsoft Authenticator -Set up your account screen, click the Next button.

On the Microsoft Authenticator -Scan the QR code screen, a QR code should be displayed. 

  • From your mobile device, select the option to Scan a QR code.  If that option is not available, you may need to choose Add Work or School Account.
     
  • Point your mobile device's camera to the computer screen to scan the displayed QR code.
  • Once the account has been added to your mobile device, click Next on the computer to verify that everything is configured correctly.

9.

An activation request will be sent to your phone. Please click Approve on your mobile device to complete the setup.  From the computer, click Next to complete the Microsoft Authenticator app set up.
