Installing the VPN Client [Windows]

Overview

This article will provide guidance on how to set up and install the Fortinet VPN software onto your institutional device. This article is for the Microsoft Windows operating system.  To connect to the College's network remotely, please understand that by doing so you agree to the College's Acceptable Use Policy.

Procedure

  1. Open a Web Browser (Edge, Firefox, Chrome) and navigate to HCC_VPN Installer

  2. Once the page is displayed, your browser will display a site with two folders and three files.  Select the file that is appropriate for your Operating System

     
  3. Once you’ve selected the appropriate install, you should see the file downloading in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. The location of this visual may change based on what browser you’ve chosen to download the client.

  4. Once the download has completed, Double click on the file in your downloads to launch the installer.  You may be prompted with a User Account Control dialog box.  If prompted, plesae click Yes to launch the installer.


  5. This will start the installation process in which you will need to check the box "Yes, I have read and accept the License Agreement" (clicking on the words License Agreement will take you to the document if you would like to review it), and the Next to begin the installation.



  6. When the FortiClient Setup box appears you will choose Next leaving the default installation location as is. You will choose Install on the next prompt to begin the Installation. The installation will continue until is has completed.  Once complete, and the installation will continue without your input until it has completed at which time you can select Finish.










     

  7. Once the installation is completed you will see a FortiClient Icon on your desktop. Please note that some machines may prompt you to Reboot your system after the installation has completed, please do reboot your system before continuing.


     
  8. Double-click on this new FortiClient icon and it should open to the Fabric Telemetry tab on the left and show a status if Connected to EMS. If you do not have a connected status, you can still proceed to the next step as the connection will become available once your system has updated with EMS.


     

  9. Next click on the Remote Access tab on the left-hand side of the box. If you were connected to EMS you should have a pre-loaded VPN connection HCC_VPN available for you to login to. You will enter your NetID only and your password and choose Connect. To confirm connection status, double-click on the FortiClient VPN icon on your desktop again and you should see a dotted green line between the PC and the World, a Duration of your VPN connection, and have the ability to choose Disconnect. If you do not have a pre-defined connection available you can create on by clicking on the Settings gear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, choose Add a new connection, and then enter the information as seen in the New VPN Connection box screen shot and select Save.
